Dead as a Doornail (The 5th Sookie Stackhouse novel)

Title: Dead as a Doornail

Author: Charlaine Harris

Dead as a Doornail

Setting: Bon Temps and Shreveport, Lousiana

Characters: Sookie Stackhouse, a barmaid with the ability to read minds; Sam, her shape-shifter boss; Eric, viking vampire sheriff; Bill, Sookie’s vampire ex-boyfriend; Alcide, a werewolf; Claudine and Claude, fairy twins; Charles Twinings, pirate vampire; and about a million men who are attracted to Sookie cause she’s just so damned irresistible.

Main Problem/Conflict: Someone’s picking off shape shifters.

Also, the packmaster of the Shreveport werewolves died in a car crash, so they’re electing a new leader.

And someone tried to burn down Sookie’s house (with Sookie in it).

Oh, and Tara is an abusive relationship with a vampire.

And Jason is now a werepanther.

And Debra, Alcide’s ex-lady friend, has gone missing (because Sookie totally shot her! In the face! BLAM!).

And Eric is upset because he can’t remember what happened while he was under the witches spell (He showed Sookie Valhalla and took a bullet for her! In the chest! BLAM!).

And Bill is still trying to win back Sookie’s affections even though he cheated on her, almost killed her, and then raped her. But, you know how men get sometimes…

And every single male in the book wants to bone Sookie.

Conclusion: There are really convoluted explanations for everything, I can assure you.

Did you like this book/Would you recommend it to a friend?: Dare I say this? I think Charlaine Harris’ skills as an author are improving with each book. There are a few too many moving pieces with this one, but, yeah, I think the writing has gotten better. There were a few great laugh-out-loud moments (Andy Bellefleur pointing to Sam-being-a-bloodhound and saying “I don’t know who you are, but you stay a dog”.).

So yeah, I enjoyed this. I’m probably going to dive into the next one right now because it’s too hot to do anything other than sit still and read. Also all my other books are packed up, so I’m trying to read the books I have borrowed from people.
